The Wellington Wairarapa Branch of Civil Contractors New Zealand has recognised the outstanding career and contribution of Branch Life Member Vic Draper, who has recently retired from the civil construction industry. By Laura Hae Hae.
At the branch’s AGM on 30 June, Vic was presented with a commemorative gift from the branch: a model Caterpillar dozer, a fitting tribute to someone whose career has been synonymous with earthmoving and whose passion for Cat equipment is well known.
A third-generation earthmoving contractor, Vic has continued a proud family legacy in civil contracting that stretches back to the 1930s and now spans four generations. After the original Draper family business closed in the 1980s, Vic established Drapers Earthmoving, building a highly respected company recognised for its expertise in large-scale bulk earthworks.
The Draper family’s connection with CCNZ is equally remarkable. Vic’s grandfather was a founding member of the organisation and holds the record as its longest-serving President, staying in the role for eight years. His father, Tom Draper, also served as CCNZ President in the early 1970s.
Vic has proudly continued that tradition through his own service to the Wellington Wairarapa Branch, serving as both a committee member and Branch Chair. In recognition of his outstanding commitment and dedication, he was awarded Branch Life Membership.
Beyond the worksite, Vic is renowned for his love of Caterpillar machinery and the restoration of classic earthmoving equipment and trucks. After decades of dedication to the industry, Vic’s retirement marks the end of an exceptional chapter. His leadership, knowledge and unwavering support of the branch have made a lasting impact, and he leaves behind a legacy that will be remembered for many years to come.
