Caption: What do you do when your HD-16 has worn out its undercarriage and you’re short of a compactor?⁣
You make one of course!!⁣
This highly unusual A-C HD-16D belongs to Taylor & Culley and was photographed at Maungarakei, Wellington, on a housing job in 1975.⁣
Culley’s also had a similarly converted Allis HD-15 as well, both machines converted in the company’s workshops⁣

Caption: Sitting in the sun, hopefully waiting for a job is this early production model A-C HD-16DC.⁣
Outfitted with an angle blade on the front and towing an Isaacson cable operated ripper at the back (almost out of shot).⁣
The double drum cable control unit is most likely a model 75. Still a good set of undercarriage left on this old girl. ⁣

Caption: Goodman Earthmovers owned this direct drive A-C HD-16D photographed in Wellington’s Kapiti district in 1974.⁣
It has been fitted with a three-way hydraulic system and is towing a Euclid SS-12 scraper bowl, salvaged from an ex-Ministry of Works motor scraper.⁣
This is a bit of an unusual HD-16 and may have been an agricultural model in a former life as it has a front bumper and the comparatively rare Farr air cleaner arrangement.⁣

Caption: Powershift transmission equipped A-C HD-16DP in the USA with cable operated straight blade and a Garwood model HD rear double drum cable control unit.⁣
This PCU has come off an older machine (possibly an HD-15), as when the powershift HD-16DP was introduced, the current model of PCU fitted was usually a model A-C model 75.⁣

Caption: An interesting A-C HD-16 with an extra ‘buddy’ seat, very unusual track shoes, and what appears to be a Caterpillar dozer blade.⁣
The power control unit for the cable operated blade is an A-C model 75 on the rear and the cable is routed from the rear to the nose of the machine through a tube on the RH side of the machine, a not uncommon practice in the 40s, 50s and early 60s.⁣
This is a USA-based example.⁣
